About Sarteano, Italy
About the town
Sarteano (pop. 4,700) is located in the province of Siena, region of Tuscany, app. 100 km southeast of Florence and 60 km southeast of Siena. A medieval castle (dating from 1038) overlooks the town, which is centered on the small Piazza del XXIV Giugno. The workshop and final concert will be held in the historic center, a pedestrian area of winding streets, quaint homes, lovely shops and fine restaurants. Despite its beauty, this is not a tourist-heavy town and most locals do not speak English. But don’t worry, we will teach you some key conversational phrases in our daily Italian culture and language classes! You will be enjoying all the town has to offer in no time.
More detailed information about Sarteano and all the local offerings and events can be found at the Sarteano Living wesbite.
Sarteano boasts extremely fine restaurants, caffes and gelaterias. You will be surprised at the fantastic meals to be had in the center of this historic town. Enjoying fine food and wine is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Italian culture! We especially enjoy Osteria da Gagliano, La Locanda dei Tintori, Bar I Diavoli (gelato!) and Chiostro Cennini. You will have time to try them all!
There are events happening almost every evening in town, culminating in the annual Giostra del Saracino, a jousting tournament which pits one neighborhood, or contrada, against another. This medieval festival has been held here for hundreds of years. The Museum of Archeology and thousand-year-old Castle are fascinating to explore, and the weekly farmers market on Friday mornings is not to be missed!
A favorite afternoon hangout is the Parco delle Piscine, which boasts a sparkling spring fed pool, caffe, plenty of lounge chairs and more. Daily tickets can be purchased at the guesthouse, La Gustea.
In addition, a great new open top tour bus runs through Sarteano on Fridays and Sundays, to facilitate visits to nearby Tuscan towns and cities. More information about Sarteano, events, and the tour bus can be found at the website linked above and at the helpful tourist office in town.
